What do I need to know if I want to be a freelancer in France ?

16/05/2022

A freelancer is not regarded as an employee. For this reason, you generally won't receive a monthly salary but financial compensation for your services.

Before becoming a freelancer, you will need to declare your activity to the "Centre de Formalité des Entreprises" or CFE for short. This can be done online. Once this is done, you will receive a SIRET/SIREN number which will allow your clients to rest assured of the legal existence of your business in France. You will also need to be covered by an insurance policy.

In order to become a freelancer in France, you will need to have a temporary/permanent visa.

It is possible to be a freelancer abroad and provide your services from abroad under the condition that your business is registered in France. In order to do so, it is crucial to have a company address in France.
